There are moments in politics that don’t just land – they thunder. Earlier today, we saw one of them.
During a heated Senate hearing, Sen. Adam Schiff tore through the smokescreen of bureaucracy and corporate allegiance to deliver a devastating takedown of EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin – a Trump appointee whose short tenure has been marked by mass grant cancellations, staff purges, and a blatant disregard for public health.
And Schiff didn’t hold back.
He looked Zeldin straight in the eye and told the truth:
That cutting the EPA’s budget by more than half isn’t just numbers on a page – it’s cancer in someone’s lungs. It’s lead in a child’s drinking water. It’s a legacy of suffering that millions of Americans will quietly carry while the wealthy and well-connected celebrate deregulation over champagne.
Schiff laid it bare.
“Your legacy will be more lung cancer. It’ll be more bladder cancer… My kids are going to be breathing that air just like yours. My family is going to be drinking the water just like yours.”
In a moment where Republicans are dismantling public safeguards under the banner of “freedom” while handing favors to Big Oil and industry donors, Democrats need to show what it really means to fight back.
Not with platitudes. Not with half-measures. But with fury. With facts. And with fire.
Zeldin mocked Schiff as an “aspiring fiction writer.” Schiff shot back with a reality check:
“The fiction is thinking you can slash protections and not pay the price in human lives.”
Republicans want to turn the EPA into a pro-polluter lobbying arm. Democrats need to make them answer for every child poisoned and every cancer diagnosis. We can’t let the quiet cruelty of deregulation go unanswered.
Adam Schiff showed us what it means to fight for the people, not polluters. He showed us what moral clarity looks like in the face of bureaucratic indifference. And he reminded us:
The stakes are real. The consequences are deadly. And the fight is on.
We’ll never shy away from reporting the truth. Including hard truths. And supporting Democrats along the way.
Even when our democratic values are under attack. Especially then.
