BREAKING: While MAGA attacks our most vulnerable, Gavin Newsom just announced his big plan to fight back
Good morning
At a time when Republicans in Washington are pushing policies that would make it harder for families to put food on the table, California Governor Gavin Newsom is moving in the opposite direction. His administration just announced that California is launching SUN Bucks for summer 2026, a program designed to help families feed their children while school is out and kids no longer have access to free school meals during the day
.
This is the kind of policy that actually matters in people’s lives.
We’ll break down everything you need to know about Newsom’s big plan below. But before we do, please, consider becoming a paid subscriber today. Your support helps us continue to highlight all of the ways Democrats are delivering in this critical moment. Thank you for your continued support.
Eligible families will receive $120 per child in food benefits for the summer, broken down as $40 per month for June, July, and August. More than 3.5 million eligible children in California are expected to be automatically enrolled. That means millions of families will get real, direct support to help buy groceries during one of the most difficult times of the year for working parents.
And that matters because childhood hunger does not disappear when the school year ends. For far too many families, school meals are not just convenient. They are essential. They are part of how parents make the budget work. They are part of how children get through the day ready to learn, grow, and thrive.
Governor Newsom understands this. California understands this. And Democrats understand this.
While Republicans keep talking about “family values,” they are backing policies that would cut food assistance, restrict eligibility, and make life harder for families already stretched thin by high costs. The same politicians who claim to care about children are perfectly willing to support cuts that could take food away from kids and working families.
That is the contrast voters need to see.
Newsom is not just talking about protecting children. He is doing it. California was already the first state to implement a statewide universal meals program for public schoolchildren, guaranteeing students access to free meals during the school day. Now, with SUN Bucks, the state is making sure that support continues when classrooms close for the summer.
This is how government should work. It should make life easier for working families. It should ensure children are fed. It should step in when Washington Republicans try to rip away support from the people who need it most.
No child should go hungry because school is out. No parent should have to wonder whether they can afford groceries while politicians in Washington hand out favors to the wealthy and powerful. And no state should sit back quietly while federal leaders make cruel choices that hurt families.
Governor Newsom is showing what Democratic leadership looks like in action. He is fighting back against Republican cuts, protecting children, supporting parents, and proving that government can still be a force for good.
This is the difference between the two parties. Republicans cut. Democrats deliver.

Thank goodness. I see here in Georgia where kids go hungry when school is out in summer. Our governor will never do anything about that, though.
better $ spent on feeding our kids than on billion $ aircraft carriers and useless( they almost all are) wars .Bravo to you Mr. Newsome. Go for the BIG one.
