The shutdown is here and Democrats have found a clear message: health care is the centerpiece of the fight. Meanwhile, Republicans are scrambling to come up with a winning one, instead relying on scapegoats and spin. On Good Morning America, Speaker Mike Johnson claimed Democrats want to give health care to undocumented immigrants. It’s the latest version of an old GOP tactic: blaming immigrants to deflect from their own cuts. Leader Hakeem Jeffries pushed back on that lie, underscoring that what’s really at stake are ACA subsidies that, if lost, would send premiums soaring for millions.
Republicans have also threatened “mass firings” of federal workers. But as Rep. Maxwell Frost noted, that threat is ringing hollow for Democrats this time around. Since the beginning of this administration, Trump and the GOP have been doing everything in their power to fire government officials and gut the federal workforce. For Democrats, the real crisis is families facing premium hikes of up to 300% when ACA subsidies vanish.
